Wireless carriers need to ensure that wireless retail services are available nationwide and within a short period of time. While carriers did own corporate retail stores, it was not nearly enough to massively distribute their products to the consumer base. Carriers needed distributors capable of servicing one or several geographical markets.
It was much more cost efficient for the carrier to pay an independent wholesale company to run their indirect retail operation as opposed to going through the expense and headache of keeping this part of their business in house. This is how a new business model in the wireless industry was born - the master agent.
The master agent's responsibilities have evolved to include:
- Supporting local dealers
- Education and training
- Providing equipment such as cell phones, accessories and prepaid coupons
- Processing and payout activation commissions
Today a master agent can service anywhere from 50 to 3000 dealers for one or several carriers.

- Analytical tools which allow a master agent to instantly create any custom statistical report from their database without any prior programming knowledge.
